At Home Fitness Equipment – More Than Just Lifting Weights

Here we go again starting a post talking about being stuck at home and not being able to go to the gym because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

If you haven’t already purchased some at home fitness equipment and now you’re starting to think you won’t be able to hit the gym for another 3 months or longer, this may be the time to pull the trigger!

I will walk through a few of my favorite, cheaper items, that you can order online. It really seems like that is how we are going to be handling things for the summer, online shopping with home deliveries. All of these items are available online and I either own them myself or have read numerous reviews and picked what in my opinion are the best for the value.

Resistance Bands

I did a post already on how to use resistance bands that you can read here, and in that post I talked about the Ripcords Resistance Bands which in my opinion are some of the best bands on the market. But let’s say you don’t want to spend that much, maybe you plan to ditch them once the gym is open again, or you aren’t sure if they’re right for you so you want to try them first.

Well if that’s the case than you can get a set of resistance bands or exercise bands from amazon for under $35 and they should do the trick for now. Another option is to get a set of loop resistance bands which you can use in different ways to work out, these are great if you don’t have an anchor point to attach them to.

Resistance bands are some of my favorite things to use for working out, if you don’t have dumbbells or a cable machine than this is a cheap yet effective way to get some at home fitness equipment.

Jump Rope or Trampoline

Let’s say you don’t like running, or you don’t have the space for a big piece of cardio equipment, what are you going to do for cardio and conditioning? If anyone were to ask me that I would first say get a jump rope; which is just a fitness industry way of saying skipping rope, or a trampoline. Both can be a great piece of at home fitness equipment that won’t take up a lot of space and doesn’t cost all that much.

I know, I know, both of these sound like a kids toy and you’re wondering how you will even get a workout from these toys you used to play with in middle school. Well I can assure you that if used properly you will get a better workout from these than lots of the big expensive pieces of at home fitness equipment.

Don’t stress about not being very good with a skipping rope or worrying about bouncing right off that little trampoline, cause like anything in life, practice makes perfect and it won’t take long before you are jumping around like Rocky with Mick yelling at you. Trust me when I tell you that when I first used a jump rope I was probably more reminiscent of Scooby Doo tangled in a net.

Ankle or Wrist Weights

This is another one of those old school pieces of at home fitness equipment that is still around in 2020, there’s a reason for that, they are cheap, you can use them anywhere, you can do a lot of different exercises with them and most importantly, THEY WORK.

Ankle Weights are available in a few different weights and are adjustable to fit ankles and wrists of all sizes. This makes them good for anyone in the family to use and you don’t even have to stop your day to day activities to use them. Strap them on any time during the day, vacuuming the house? Put them on your wrists or ankles and add a little resistance. Walking the dog? Same thing, strap them on and make it just a little harder. All this will eventually add up and pretty soon you won’t even notice you’re wearing them.

When that happens you can grab a weighted vest and start wearing that throughout the day, don’t worry, I’m not talking about the bulky 80 pound bulletproof looking vests.

Not all fitness activities have to be a planned work out for you to see results, it happens one day at a time, just try to be better today than you were yesterday!

Gliding Discs and Ab Roller

Here we go with another couple of items that look and sound more like a toy than at home fitness equipment, but I can assure you a set of gliding discs or an ab roller have the potential to become one of the hardest body weight exercise, pieces of equipment you can get for under $40. There are several workouts available online from beginner to advanced showing you how to use these to hit every muscle group in the body.

Now What’s Stopping You?

If you purchased any of the above pieces of at home fitness equipment you could start down the road to being fit, or maybe it’s getting back to fit. If you buy more than one it adds some variety and changes things up to keep you motivated and interested. It doesn’t look like the gyms are going to be open for business any time soon, and after reading this you don’t have that as an excuse to skip the workouts.

Pick something that you enjoy, something that fits your budget and maybe even something other people in your household will enjoy using as well. Kids need to stay active in these times too!

  1. Interesting to see there is so much you can do at home. What is the advantage of using ankle and wrist weights?

    • Hey Sasa,
      Ankle and wrist weights are good to use while you do regular house work or lighter activities because they add a little bit of resistance that over time will add some strength and conditioning. But they can also be used to make your workouts a little more difficult as well, if you are doing box jumps or burpees with ankle weights on it may not sound like much but just having that extra 10 pounds will make them a little more difficult.

  2. I think it is useful that you are discussing different types of equipment which can be used at home and do not cost quite a lot. I have a question though about trampoline, doesn’t that need space outside to put it? I ask because people who live in flats/apartment buildings may not have outside space to lay them. You also discussed the ankle and wrist weights, I have seen them but do not know their advantage. I think maybe if you had also put the advantages of using these it will help. How long are you supposed to leave the weights on? 

    Otherwise I found the topic and the items discussed quite useful especially that people can not go to the gym. They are also-useful even to people who want to do exercise at home not because of the pandemic but because they do not like the gym.

  3. These pieces of fitness equipment surely are portable and small enough to use, even in a house that has too much furniture in it.  Being in during the pandemic has brought this to my attention.  

    I do have bands and have dug them out, using some suggestions from an article like this.  The Trampoline was an exercise I loved but discontinued on the Dr orders and dizziness that lasted a while.  May need to see how it would be nowadays.  The gliding discs and ab roller are some I have not used.  Your approach to exercise and a day at a time with doing a bit every day is such a common-sense way to exercise.  I really am not trying to prove anything to anyone but myself.  I just want to be healthy.  The weighted body vest to add to the wrist and ankle weights sounded interesting.  Thanks for bringing them to my attention, Sami

  4. It is a very interesting piece to read. I’ve I’ve been missing gym ever since the lockdown and I had no idea that so much could be done at home. Thanks to this article, now I have some clear pictures in my mind about how I can start working out at home and create my very own little gym at home. The equipment that the author has mentioned is not at all tacky ones and everyone can use it easily. The author has given a very user-friendly kind of information. I feel so excited to start working out already!

  5. Hello Tyler, thank you for sharing these at home fitness equipment we can purchase so we can be on the path of fitness once again especially now that we do not have access to the gym. It is only wise to spend wisely this period, so I find your alternative resistance bands to be much more affordable. Good to know they’re no just affordable but are effective as well. Also, trampoline is my favorite for jumping.

  7. Heloo over there, I must say that this is really a motivating article on  fitness home equipment, more than Just lifting weights. Indeed this global pandemic has restricted so many from going about their normal fitness excercises at the gym. But it’s really not a huge excuse to neglect ones fitness goal. The skipping rope is really a nice option, I do make use of that and it’s really helps.

Since the outbreak of Corona virus, which led to the closure of gymnasium, having an adequate exercise has been so difficult. Having gone through the various home fitness equipment machine in this article, I will definitely do well to have the Gliding discs and AB roller to get all of my muscles to exercise.
